Michelin Guide adds 470 hotels to 2026 Key selection

Michelin's hotel inspectors added 470 properties across 79 destinations to the 2026 Key selection, published on September 18, bringing the worldwide total to 2,832 hotels rated from One to Three Keys.

The Key programme, launched in 2024 as a hotel companion to the star-rated restaurant guide, now covers more than 9,400 properties Michelin has inspected. This year's expansion pushed it into ten countries for the first time: Armenia, Benin, Botswana, Kazakhstan, Liechtenstein, Mongolia, Myanmar, Rwanda, Slovakia and Zimbabwe.

Eighteen hotels earned Three Keys for the first time, Michelin's top rating, defined by inspectors as "an extraordinary stay." More than 80 other properties moved up a tier from last year's list. One Key stands for "a very special stay" and Two Keys for "an exceptional stay," the same three-tier logic Michelin uses for restaurant stars.

Ten new countries in one year turns the Key selection from niche add-on into a serious rival for hotel awards.

Europe still leads the count

Europe accounts for 1,338 Key hotels, still the deepest bench in the selection, ahead of Asia and the Middle East with 600 and Africa with 113. The global total breaks down to 155 Three-Key hotels, 657 Two-Key and 2,020 One-Key.

"This second global selection reflects the extraordinary momentum driving the hospitality sector once again this year," said Gwendal Poullennec, Michelin's international director, crediting independent hoteliers for much of the growth.

In the United States, 65 new Keys went to urban hotels in cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, New Orleans, New York, Oklahoma City, Raleigh, Washington and West Hollywood. Georgia alone picked up five, with the St. Regis Atlanta among the new entrants.

Doubts about the Key selection

Michelin has not disclosed how many inspectors work the Key list or how they weigh service against design, a gap that keeps fuelling comparisons with rival rankings such as The World's 50 Best Hotels, whose top slot stayed unchanged this year. The restaurant side of the guide faces the same question every cycle, most recently when it added four restaurants to its Washington, DC guide with no public scoring breakdown.

The next Key selection is expected in September 2027, following the annual pattern Michelin has now set for two years running.
