Michelin Guide Toronto reveals its 2026 stars on 22 September

Chefs find out on the night at the Liberty Grand, behind closed doors. Two weeks later Texas gets the same news by press release, with nobody in the room at all.

The Michelin Guide Toronto & Region reads out its 2026 selection on the evening of 22 September at the Liberty Grand, and the room stays shut to anyone without an invitation.

Michelin fixed the date in a release dated 21 May and has not moved it since. Chefs and their teams learn on the night whether they have held a star, gained one, or dropped out of the selection altogether. Destination Toronto is named as a partner in the same release.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the guide, said in that release that over the past four years the anonymous inspectors have been impressed by the passion, growth and commitment to excellence of Toronto's restaurant community. It is the language of a partnership that both sides expect to renew.

A guide that fills a room still believes the room is part of the product.

What the Michelin Guide Toronto night settles

Stars are the headline, but the evening also fixes the Bib Gourmands, the Green Stars and the individual awards for service, sommeliers and young chefs. For a kitchen on the edge of the list, the gap between recommended and one star is the difference between a booking sheet that fills three days out and one that fills three months out.

Nothing leaks beforehand. Inspectors work anonymously and pay their own bills, and restaurants are not briefed in advance. The only published facts are the date, the venue and the guarantee that the full list goes online within minutes of being read from the stage.

Ceremonies are quietly becoming the exception

Toronto is keeping the staged version at the moment Michelin is dropping it elsewhere. The 2026 Texas selection will be issued as a press release on 8 October, with no event, after two years of ceremonies in Houston. Michelin now covers more than 60 destinations and says it has broadened the ways it announces them.

The money behind those decisions is visible in Texas, where the initial three-year commitment was backed by a 900,000-dollar partnership between Travel Texas and city tourism organisations. Toronto's arrangement with Destination Toronto has never been costed in public. For more on how guides work as a business, see the restaurants desk.

So 22 September is worth reading twice: once for the restaurants, once for the format. A guide that still puts chefs in a room to hear their own names is a guide that still thinks the room is worth paying for.
