Podium Index ranks US coffee roasters by contest results

Podium Coffee Club built a free leaderboard that scores US roasters only on blind competition finishes, weighted by how recent and how big each win was.

A new leaderboard, the Podium Index, ranks US coffee roasters using nothing but their results in blind-judged competitions. Podium Coffee Club, the Seattle subscription service behind it, published the tool on 3 November 2026, pulling scores from five national contests.

The Index draws on the US Coffee Championships Roasting event, Golden Bean Americas, the Golden Bean World Series, the coffee category of the Good Food Awards, and the Global Coffee Awards. A roaster earns points only for a podium finish at one of those five, nothing else counts.

Scores are adjusted for how big each competition is and how recently a roaster placed. A win from this year counts in full; older results are worth progressively less, so a roaster has to keep competing to stay near the top.

We built the Podium Index because we wanted an answer we could actually stand behind.

How the scoring works

Podium's co-founder, Sam LaRobardiere, says the company built the tool because it wanted a ranking it could defend without relying on tasting notes or marketing copy. "We built the Podium Index because we wanted an answer we could actually stand behind," he said in the launch announcement.

The Index is free to browse at podiumcoffeeclub.com and updates within days of each competition publishing results. It gives roasters and drinkers a single list instead of five separate results pages to track across the year.

A ranking tied to a subscription box

Podium Coffee Club itself only ships coffee from roasters who appear on the Index. Its two subscription tiers, Gold from $24.50 a month and Platinum from $29.50, promise beans shipped within 24 hours of roasting from a non-VC-backed company.

That overlap matters: the company that built the ranking also sells the only product built on it. Podium cites favourable coverage from outlets including Forbes Vetted and Wired to back its own case, a detail worth weighing against the Index's claim to independence.

Roasters who have never entered the five qualifying contests simply do not appear, however well regarded their coffee is among buyers or critics. For a crowded field of specialty-coffee rankings, that is less a flaw than the point: competitions, not consensus, decide who is on the list.
