The Taste season 15 has its coaches cook first

The Taste season 15 opens on October 21 with its coaches, not its contestants, cooking first: the four judges will turn German street food into the blind-tasting show's signature spoon-sized bites.

The anniversary season runs nine episodes on Sat.1 and its streaming platform Joyn, airing Wednesdays at 20:15 starting October 21. Host Angelina Kirsch returns for the format, produced by Redseven Entertainment, in which contestants are judged on flavor alone before their identity is revealed.

The season's twist moves the Coachbattle from its usual place in the semi-final to the premiere itself. Two-Michelin-star chef Tim Raue takes on Backfisch, restaurateur Elif Oskan tackles currywurst, fellow chef Alexander Herrmann prepares an Imbiss burger, and television cook Steffen Henssler works on döner.

Modesty is off the menu. "I! Will! Win!" Herrmann has declared, while Raue counters, "I don't wish the others anything." Henssler has told viewers to "watch as I take the trophy," and Oskan says she is "truly ready for the competition."

The change is the first to the coach lineup's dynamic since Henssler and Oskan joined last year, replacing longtime judges Frank Rosin and Alexander Kumptner. Raue and Herrmann remain the only coaches to have sat on the panel since earlier seasons.

A prize built for repeat viewing

Season 14's premiere lifted the show's share among the 14-to-49 target demographic from an average 8.8 percent to 11.8 percent, according to the broadcaster, a bump producers are clearly hoping the coach-battle opener repeats.

The eventual winner takes home 50,000 euros, a Fissler kitchen set and a cover feature in Prisma magazine, prizes unchanged from recent seasons. The announcement lands the same week Germany's first CHEF:IN Awards honoured women chefs in Hamburg, another entry in a crowded autumn for the country's chef-recognition calendar.

By the second episode, the coaches return to tasting blind rather than being tasted. Whether the format survives fifteen more years may depend less on who wins the trophy than on how many more ways there are left to reheat the same premiere.
