Sotheby's to auction a Macallan 1926 at the distillery
A Fine and Rare 60 Years Old bottle, estimated at up to £2.2 million, leads Sotheby's first sale held on-site at The Macallan's Speyside estate.
Sotheby's will hold its first auction on the grounds of The Macallan distillery in Speyside on 9 October 2026, led by a Macallan 1926 bottle estimated at £1.7 million to £2.2 million.
The sale marks 100 years since the whisky in the bottle was distilled. It comes from cask number 263, one of only 14 bottles ever drawn from it under the Fine and Rare label, and none has come to auction since 2023, when a similarly labelled example set a whisky auction record.
More than 40 lots make up the sale, drawn almost entirely from private collections rather than the distillery's own stock. Alongside the 1926 bottle, Macallan has consigned an edition from its Romantica Collection, estimated at £60,000 to £100,000.
Buyers are paying for scarcity and provenance, not a drinking experience.
A distillery becomes the saleroom
Sotheby's has run whisky sales for decades, but always from its own auction rooms in London, Edinburgh or online. Holding the sale on-site at Macallan's Speyside estate ties the auction directly to the liquid's place of origin, a format the house has used before for wine sales at vineyards but rarely for whisky.
Sotheby's global head of whisky and spirits called the sale "a landmark moment for the world of whisky collecting". Macallan's creative director described the centenary sale as "a very special milestone for our brand".
The combined pre-sale estimate for all lots stands at roughly £2.3 million, meaning the 1926 bottle alone could account for the majority of the total if it sells within its estimate.
What a six-figure bottle actually buys
Rare whisky bought at this level rarely gets opened. Buyers are paying for scarcity and provenance, not a drinking experience, and bottles from limited casks like 263 typically move straight from auction house to private collection or investment portfolio.
Whether the on-site format changes who bids, drawing in collectors who want the distillery visit as much as the bottle, will become clear once Sotheby's publishes the full catalogue ahead of the October sale. It follows a strong run for rare Japanese and Scotch whisky alike: a Karuizawa 1960 fetched $625,000 at Sotheby's Nightcap sale earlier this year.
