Karuizawa 1960 fetches $625,000 at Sotheby's Nightcap sale

One of only two known bottles drawn straight from cask 5627 topped a $14.3m debut for Sotheby's brand-new wine and spirits festival in New York City.

A bottle of Karuizawa 1960 sold for $625,000 (about £472,000) at Sotheby's, the top lot in the debut New York edition of the auction house's Nightcap wine and spirits festival.

The bottle, nicknamed "The Prototype," was drawn from cask 5627 and hand-filled by Karuizawa's final master distiller on 20 December 2012, a year after the distillery itself had closed. It is one of only two bottles known to have been filled directly from that cask before any commercial release, which accounts for most of the reason its $600,000 high estimate did not hold.

The sale concluded on 20 September and formed part of a broader debut: five concurrent auctions raised $14.3m in New York, against a combined pre-sale estimate of $8.8m to $12.6m, with a 97% sell-through rate and 62% of lots beating their high estimate.

Karuizawa closed in 2011; the market for what little it left behind keeps climbing regardless.

A closed distillery keeps setting the pace

Karuizawa opened in 1955 and shut in 2011, leaving a finite stock of casks that has been feeding the secondary market ever since — the same dynamic that pushed a single cask of Scotland's Port Ellen to auction for a million euros. The Whisky & Whiskey sale that carried the Prototype bottle also included the Wax Top Collection of more than 500 bottles and made $2.9m in total, selling every lot. Scarcity, not age alone, is doing the work: Japanese distilleries that have stopped producing tend to hold their prices even when younger, still-running names soften.

Wine results at the same festival dwarfed the whisky total. The Impeccable Burgundy Collection Part VI brought in $8.6m on its own, a single Romanée-Conti 2002 methuselah made $250,000, and six magnums of Henri Jayer's 1993 Vosne-Romanée sold for $350,000.

New York joins a young circuit

Nightcap is Sotheby's newest recurring sale format, launched in Hong Kong in March 2026 before this first New York outing. Auction houses have been building out dedicated wine and spirits calendars for several years, competing for the same shrinking pool of rare Japanese whisky as demand from Asian and North American collectors keeps outpacing what closed distilleries like Karuizawa can still supply. More lots from both categories are expected at Sotheby's next scheduled spirits sale, though the house has not yet said whether another Karuizawa cask bottling is among them.
