Daniel Rogan's AO joins the Michelin Guide in Southampton
Simon Rogan's son returns his Oxford Street restaurant to Michelin's listings this month, backed by the L'Enclume group's farm, sommelier and back-office support.

AO by Daniel Rogan has entered the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland's September online listings, one of 22 restaurants added this month, with inspectors praising its "finely balanced" cooking.
The restaurant sits on Oxford Street in Southampton's old town, run by Daniel Rogan, son of Simon Rogan, the chef behind the three-Michelin-starred L'Enclume in Cumbria. Daniel trained in his father's kitchens before working under Marcus Wareing at the Berkeley and at the three-starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay.
From pop-up to permanent address
A three-star name opens doors in Southampton, but weekday covers still have to be won one table at a time.
AO began as a pop-up farm restaurant in the New Forest before Daniel secured a long-term lease on the Southampton site at the end of 2025. The restaurant had already won Best Newcomer and Best Restaurant in Hampshire after its 2022 debut, ahead of this month's addition to Michelin's main listings.
In April, AO formally joined Simon Rogan's Umbel Restaurant Group, the company behind L'Enclume and Rogan & Co. Daniel said stability was the deciding factor: "Weekends are busy, but weekdays can still be tough. Most of our guests aren't locals." Simon described the arrangement as collaboration rather than takeover: "We advise and support, but it's his."
A father's produce, a son's menu
The partnership gives AO access to produce from Umbel's farm in the Lake District and a wine list built with L'Enclume's sommelier, alongside administrative support for reservations, HR and marketing that Daniel said frees him to focus on cooking rather than admin. An open kitchen and interior refresh are underway at the Oxford Street site, alongside a rebuilt lunch offer designed to draw in the weekday office crowd Daniel says he still needs to win over.
Simon Rogan called his own return to the city, decades after cooking there in the late 1980s, "definitely a one-off." Simon Rogan has said his own UK expansion is largely done, which makes his backing for his son's Southampton project look more like family investment than a group strategy.
