Best godello in Spain is Prada San Martín, from Bierzo
La Semana Vitivinícola's 2026 guide gives 96 points to a single-vineyard organic white from Canedo, a score it usually keeps for age-worthy reds.
The best godello in Spain, according to the 2026 wine guide of La Semana Vitivinícola, is Prada San Martín, a single-vineyard white from Prada a Tope in Canedo, inside the DO Bierzo. The trade magazine, known as SEVI, gave it 96 points, the top score among the 23 godellos selected for the guide.
The result was reported on 24 October by Diario de León, León 24 Horas and Ponferrada Hoy. According to the winery, the guide usually reserves 96 points for age-worthy reds, which makes the grade unusual for a white from a region known above all for mencía.
Prada San Martín is made only from grapes grown on the paraje that gives it its name, beside the Palacio de Canedo in the municipality of Arganza. The vines face south on slopes of around 25%, in clay-loam soils where schist outweighs quartz. The wine spends a year in 500-litre oak barrels and at least two more years in the cellar before release.
In a valley built on mencía, the guide's highest white score went to godello.
What the tasters found in the best godello in Spain
The guide's panel described it as "fleshy, with balsamic and bitter toasted notes", praising its presence on the palate, an acidity that holds it together and a large capacity to age. Winemaker José Manuel Ferreira told local media that godello is a highly versatile grape and "much more than a variety for young wines".
The same guide gave 93 points to two more organic DO Bierzo godellos from the house: Prada Godello 2025, a young white that is the winery's best seller, and Godello 170 Miedros 2022, with a light touch of oak. The reports did not state the vintage of the 96-point bottling; the winery's online shop lists Prada San Martín 2020 at €22.50 a bottle, and Prada Godello 2025 at €12.40.
Bierzo takes on Valdeorras with its own grape
Godello's best-known address is Valdeorras, across the Galician border in the province of Ourense, where growers rescued the variety from near-disappearance a few decades ago. Bierzo, the neighbouring valley on the León side, built its name on mencía reds, and white grapes have long played a supporting role there. A Bierzo wine heading a national godello ranking puts the two appellations in direct competition for the same variety.
The award lands in a busy month for Spanish whites, after Marqués de Cáceres collected the government's best white wine award with a Rioja Gran Reserva, and as Rioja closed its earliest harvest on record.
Prada a Tope, founded by José Luis Prada, has been working in Canedo since 1972. The project behind its single-vineyard godello began with the 2017 vintage, so the guide's new leader has fewer than ten harvests behind it.
