Macallan Time:Space Sherry Cask lands at Harrods for £1,100

The Macallan Time:Space Sherry Cask, a 20-year-old single malt finished in casks seasoned with Valdespino sherry wine, went on sale at Harrods on 17 September for £1,100 a bottle.

The whisky is the third release in Macallan's Time:Space collection, a series built around unusual cask partnerships rather than age statements alone. This one draws on the distillery's 2023 purchase of a stake in Bodegas Valdespino, one of Jerez's oldest sherry houses, giving Macallan direct control over the wood its whisky rests in rather than buying seasoned casks on the open market.

Casks were built from Spanish oak and seasoned with Valdespino's own sherry wine for several years before ever holding spirit, a step Macallan says shapes the colour and spice of the finished whisky more than a standard sherry-cask maturation. The result carries darker fruit and a drier, more tannic edge than Macallan's core range.

Macallan now owns the sherry casks it ages in, not just the whisky that goes inside them.

For now the bottle is exclusive to The Macallan Boutique inside Harrods in London, with a wider release across UK specialist retailers due in October. Macallan has not confirmed whether the Sherry Cask will reach other markets before the end of the year.

A cask programme built for control

The Time:Space series began as a way for Macallan to show off cask work that a standard-age bottling can't: pairing 20-year-old spirit with wood chosen for a specific flavour outcome rather than simple availability. Owning a stake in Valdespino lets the distillery specify exactly how those staves are seasoned, down to the grape and the length of time the wine sits in the wood before whisky ever touches it.

It's a similar logic to the one driving Ardbeg's move to a permanent 15-year-old this month, or the record price fetched by a single cask at the Port Ellen auction earlier this year: Scotch producers increasingly sell the story of the wood as much as the spirit itself.

A £1,100 bottle with a narrow release

At £1,100, the Sherry Cask sits well above Macallan's standard range but below the distillery's rarest limited editions, positioning it as a showcase bottle for collectors rather than a mass-market launch. Whether the wider October rollout changes that calculation will depend on how much stock Macallan is willing to commit beyond the Harrods exclusive.
