Michelle Bernstein closes Sra. Martinez in Coral Gables
The Spanish restaurant she revived on Galiano Street in late 2024 serves its last dinner on 26 September. The couple behind it keep the space and have not said what comes next.
Sra. Martinez, the Spanish restaurant chef Michelle Bernstein reopened in Coral Gables less than two years ago, will serve its last dinner on Saturday 26 September. Bernstein and her husband and business partner, David Martinez, announced the closure on social media without giving a reason.
"After a lot of thought, we've made the difficult decision to close Sra. Martinez," Bernstein wrote, in a post reported by the Miami Herald. The couple say they will keep the space at 2325 Galiano Street and are already considering what to do there next, but they have not said what that will be. Until Saturday, they are asking regulars to come in for one more meal and a toast.
Sra. Martinez closes for the second time
Second closure, same address kept: the Martinez family is not leaving Galiano Street.
It is the second ending for the name. Sra. Martinez first opened in 2008 in a historic former post office in Miami's Design District and closed after dinner service on 6 July 2012, according to Miami New Times. Twelve years later, on 18 December 2024, the City of Coral Gables announced its return on Galiano Street, with Spanish cooking shaped by European and South Florida influences from the James Beard award-winning chef.
The Coral Gables room was not a modest bet: more than 4,000 square feet, with a covered patio and an indoor stage for live performances, the Miami Herald reports. Earlier in 2026, Bernstein was honoured with a tribute dinner at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, which suggests the closure says more about the room than about the cook.
What stays open for Michelle Bernstein
The rest of the business carries on. La Cañita, the couple's Latin American restaurant, keeps its sites at Bayside Marketplace, in Kendall and in Miami Beach, and Café La Trova in Little Havana, which they run with Julio Cabrera, stays open, according to the Miami Herald.
The closure lands in an uneasy season for Miami restaurant groups: Yardbird, born in Miami Beach, has filed for bankruptcy and opened a court-supervised sale. Across the Atlantic, the same week brought news that Table in Paris will close on 22 December. What Galiano Street gets next remains, for now, the couple's to announce.
