The Beefy Boys will open their eighth UK restaurant in Cambridge this winter, taking over a former BrewDog site on Bene't Street.

The independent burger brand, founded in Hereford in 2011, is targeting an opening before Christmas. It will be the brand's most easterly site to date and is expected to create 50 jobs.

The menu centres on the Beefy Boy Burger and the Oklahoma Onion Boy, a Cali-style burger, alongside loaded fries, buffalo wings, sides and hard shakes, with vegetarian and vegan options. The kitchen uses 100% grass-fed beef sourced from Herefordshire, and the brand says it works with local suppliers wherever it can.

Cambridge has an exciting and diverse food scene, and it's been one to watch for us for some time.

From back gardens to eight restaurants

The Beefy Boys was started by childhood friends Anthony "Murf" Murphy, Daniel Mayo-Evans, Christian Williams and Lee Symonds, who began cooking burgers from their gardens before opening in Hereford. The brand went on to win UK's Best Burger in 2023 and now runs seven restaurants, in Hereford, Shrewsbury, Cheltenham, Bath, Oxford, Nottingham and Exeter, plus two food trucks that work events around the country.

"Cambridge has an exciting and diverse food scene, and it's been one to watch for us for some time," Murphy said. He said the team had been eyeing the city for a while, and that the former BrewDog site becoming available made the timing right.

A London-free expansion so far

The Cambridge opening keeps the Beefy Boys' growth outside London, where independent burger brands compete hardest for space and footfall, among them Jorge Paredes, whose Milk Burger has carved out its own following in Notting Hill.

Murphy noted that just over ten years ago, the founders were cooking burgers in their back gardens, and that they are now about to open their eighth restaurant. No exact opening date has been set beyond the target of before Christmas. The brand says it will announce a full menu launch and opening hours closer to the date, alongside details of hiring for the 50 new roles.
