New Orleans Michelin star goes to Dakar NOLA, the city's fourth
Serigne Mbaye's Senegalese tasting menu was one of only three new stars in the 2026 American South guide. Emeril's, Saint-Germain and Zasu all kept theirs.

Dakar NOLA, chef Serigne Mbaye's Senegalese tasting-menu restaurant, won a New Orleans Michelin star at the Michelin Guide American South 2026 ceremony in Nashville on 21 October. It is now the fourth restaurant in the city to hold one.
The star was one of only three new ones awarded across the region this year, alongside So. Fox in Atlanta and Uberto in Gay, Georgia. Dakar NOLA joins Emeril's, which kept its two stars, and Saint-Germain and Zasu, which kept one each. Those three gave the city its first stars when the Southern guide debuted in November 2025, when Dakar was listed only as Recommended. What earned the New Orleans Michelin star
The newest star in New Orleans began as a pandemic pop-up at shared tables.
Michelin files the restaurant under Senegalese and contemporary cooking, in its top price band, with a tasting menu built on local produce and Gulf seafood. The inspectors single out Gulf crab with cassava, a shrimp and okra soup, jollof rice with habanero heat and grilled fish in tamarind broth.
The setting is small: a few tables in a cottage at 937 Leonidas Street, with a wall of masks. The guide's note praises cooking that is confident and carefully balanced, and calls the meal transportive. Dinner runs Tuesday to Saturday.
The address itself is recent. Dakar moved this year from Magazine Street to the Leonidas Street cottage, so the New Orleans Michelin star arrived within months of the change of home.
From pandemic pop-up to Nashville stage
Mbaye, born in Harlem and schooled partly in Dakar, worked at Commander's Palace and Cafe Adelaide in New Orleans before stints at Atelier Crenn and L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon. He began Dakar as a communal pop-up during the pandemic and opened a permanent restaurant in 2022 with business partner Effie Richardson.
The star caps a run of awards. The James Beard Foundation named Dakar NOLA Best New Restaurant in 2024, and Mbaye won Best Chef: South earlier in 2026. He accepted the Michelin star on stage in Nashville.
The rest of the city's haul was smaller. Alon Shaya's Safta's Table gained a Bib Gourmand, while Casimiro, Evviva, Jewel of the South, Saint Claire in Algiers and The Crustacean Club were added as Recommended.
Of the four starred kitchens in New Orleans, the newest is the only one built on West African cooking, and it reached the guide from a team that a few years ago was cooking for strangers at shared tables.
