Deliranto leaves Salou and its Michelin star behind

The only Michelin-starred restaurant in Salou serves its last dinner on 31 October. Pep Moreno is taking the concept out of the province and wants to reopen in the second half of 2027.

Deliranto, the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Salou, will serve its last dinner on Calle Llevant on 31 October, and chef Pep Moreno is taking the concept out of the province of Tarragona rather than keeping it where it won its star.

Moreno announced the closure on Tuesday, almost ten years after opening in 2017. The star arrived in 2019, two years in; a Repsol Sun and recognition from The Best Chef Awards followed. The reason he gives is practical: the lease on the current premises has ended, and his search for investors in the Camp de Tarragona came to nothing.

"I would stay if I had the option, but I haven't found it here," he told Diari de Tarragona. The new address is due to be announced on 6 October, and the target for reopening is the second half of 2027.

Deliranto changes scenery, not its story; the Michelin star stays behind in Salou.

Where Deliranto Salou goes next

Local reports name Andorra as one of the options. Moreno has said it is on the table, not that it is decided. What he has confirmed is that the format travels: he calls the concept "totally designed and replicable" and says it will keep its essence.

That essence is theatre. The Michelin Guide describes a meal that begins in the Cook & Travel gastro-bar and moves on to the dining room, with menus built on stories such as the fable of Orpheus, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, changing three or four times a year.

"Deliranto changes scenery, but not its story," Moreno wrote. The line is accurate about the kitchen and optimistic about the guide.

A Michelin star that stays at the old address

Michelin distinctions belong to a restaurant at a given address, not to a chef. When the doors on Calle Llevant close, Deliranto drops out of the selection, and a new room in a new place starts from zero, in front of inspectors who have never eaten there. Moreno has said he expects to win the star back.

The Costa Daurada loses more than a table. La Ciutat de Tarragona describes Deliranto as one of the reference points of the coast's food tourism, and Moreno also presides over Salou's association of hospitality businesses. Slow & Low in Barcelona gave up its star by changing its format; Deliranto is giving it up by changing town.

The last service is on 31 October. Where the next one will be should be known three weeks before that.
