Oded Oren opens a second London deli, this time in Hampstead

Oded Oren, the chef behind the Bib Gourmand restaurant Oren in Dalston, opens Oren Delicatessen Hampstead on Heath Street on 1 November. It is the second branch of the deli he launched on Broadway Market in Hackney in February 2023.

The Hampstead shop keeps the format of the original: a counter-led deli built around North African and Mediterranean cooking, with the bakes, breads and cakes made at the Broadway Market site each morning and driven across London to stock the new counter. For the dishes that define the city, see our guide to what to eat in London.

The shelves will carry babka and challah buns filled New York-deli style, homemade mezze, pickles and pantry staples. The bakery case adds rugelach, a chocolate-and-hazelnut babka, feta-and-graviera borekitas, challah bread-and-butter pudding and latkes served with apple sauce and sour cream.

The Hampstead shop doubles as a bottle shop, selling low-intervention wines to drink by the glass in a small courtyard.

At weekends, a sharing menu called The Slow Range extends the deli into something closer to a restaurant: beef short rib finished with Persian lime, and chicken kofte with chard and lemon.

The Hampstead site goes further than Broadway Market in one respect. It doubles as a bottle shop, selling low-intervention wines to take away or to drink by the glass in a small courtyard — a format Oren has not run before.

A second site built on the first

Oren's Broadway Market deli grew out of his Dalston restaurant and his first cookbook, opening in February 2023 with a tight menu of Israeli-inspired small plates: challah, taramasalata, chopped chicken liver, labneh, pickles and cured pollock. A Hackney Citizen review later that year praised its bread but noted the space itself — ten seats squeezed around a kitchen with a mid-room toilet — was pushed close to its limits as it took on more of a restaurant's workload.

Hampstead gives the format more room without changing the supply chain: everything still comes out of the Broadway Market kitchen, which means the new shop's ceiling is set by how much that one kitchen can turn out each day.

Why Heath Street, why now

The move puts Oren in a part of London with a strong deli and bakery tradition but comparatively little of the Middle Eastern and North African cooking he's known for — a gap the brand is betting on rather than competing head-on with Broadway Market's crowded food scene.

The team is billing it as carrying “the essence of a New York deli at its core,” a line that says more about ambition than about what's actually on the counter: babka, borekitas and short rib owe as much to Tel Aviv and the Maghreb as to the Lower East Side.

No second cookbook or further sites have been announced. For now, Hampstead is a one-off expansion, built to run on the same kitchen that has supplied Broadway Market since 2023.
