The US Barista Championship opens registration for its 2027 season on 16 September, with two qualifiers, 48 competitors and a national final in Tennessee.

Entries for the South/Central qualifier open on Wednesday 16 September at 1pm Central, and for the West qualifier on Friday 18 September at 1pm Pacific. Baristas who reached last season's final hold a reserved place; any seat left unclaimed goes back on public sale.

How the US Barista Championship fills its field

The entry fee is the cheapest part of a serious barista campaign.

Each qualifier takes 24 competitors. The South/Central round runs in Houston from 30 October to 1 November, and the West round at Mixed Grounds Coffee in San Diego from 19 to 21 November. The top nine from each go through.

That leaves an 18-strong national field, which meets at Pinewood Coffee in Franklin, Tennessee, from 28 to 31 January. The qualifying route is wider than in recent seasons: more seats in the regional rounds, fewer baristas turned away before they have poured anything.

The U.S. Coffee Championships are also running an online briefing for prospective competitors on 7 October at 5pm Central. Competitors serve espresso, milk drinks and a signature beverage, judged on flavour and on technical work inside a fixed time.

Tokyo at the end of the road

The national winner goes to the World Barista Championship, which the Specialty Coffee Association is staging at Tokyo Big Sight from 28 April to 1 May 2027, inside World of Coffee. It is the 27th edition and the first held in Tokyo for about two decades.

The economics behind the stage have moved. Green coffee has been expensive and unstable this year: arabica fell around 10% in a month as Brazil caught up on its harvest, after a long run of records. Competition lots sit at the very top of that market, which makes the entry fee the cheapest part of a serious campaign.

Both qualifying fields will be settled by the end of November, three months before Franklin and six before Tokyo.
