Taco Bell opens its first public restaurant in Germany

After nine years confined to US military bases, Taco Bell opens a franchise restaurant on Cologne's Hohenzollernring on October 3, with Berlin and Stuttgart lined up next.

Taco Bell opens its first restaurant open to the German public on October 3 in Cologne, after nine years of serving tacos only on US military bases.

The Taco Bell Cologne restaurant sits at Hohenzollernring 50, in a unit that was a Sausalitos bar until the franchise partner took it over this year. The opening was due on September 24 but slipped a week; the company has not said why.

Until now, the only Taco Bell counters in Germany sat inside US Army and Air Force bases, closed to anyone without military ID. The Cologne site is the chain's first public restaurant in continental Europe's largest economy, a market where McDonald's own recent results show how sensitive fast food has become to German wallets, split for four decades mostly between McDonald's and Burger King.

We're opening naturally when the others are closed.

Two franchise groups are behind the rollout: Feel Better Holding, which holds rights for the stretch from Bonn to Kleve, and Schaal Group, which is lining up a Stuttgart site. Berlin is also on the list. Feel Better runs the Cologne restaurant itself, through a subsidiary called Feel Better 1 Betriebs GmbH.

Taco Bell Germany's own announcement leaned on the slower pace of German Sundays: "We're opening naturally when the others are closed," the brand posted, a nod to the country's near-universal Sunday trading ban that keeps most restaurants' competitors shut.

A franchise map built city by city

The chain is not opening with a national rollout plan so much as a patchwork of regional franchise deals, each covering its own cities. That mirrors how Taco Bell expanded into the UK and Spain in past years, where growth stayed slow for several seasons before accelerating once one or two sites proved the format worked.

Cologne gives Feel Better a flagship on a street where rents remain among the highest in the Rhineland, a bet that foot traffic from the station and the cathedral will cover it. It is the same calculation chains like Popeyes made when it bet on turnover before profit in the UK.

Competing with currywurst and döner

Germany already has a cheap, fast, handheld food culture built around currywurst and döner kebab, both sold from stands that undercut any franchise on price. Taco Bell's pitch is novelty and a US fast-food brand many Germans know only from travel or television, not habit.

Whether that is enough shows up in the next twelve months, as Berlin and Stuttgart test whether Cologne's opening-week crowd turns into regular Tuesday-night trade.
