Mexico wine grape production rises to 83,178 tonnes in 2025

The agriculture ministry counts 6,071 more tonnes than in 2023 and a crop worth 22.8% more. Baja California leads, and three states grow three quarters of the total.

Mexico wine grape production reached 83,178 tonnes in 2025, up from 77,107 in 2023, the agriculture ministry said in Mexico City on 7 October. Baja California grew 30,934 tonnes of it.

The ministry, known as Agricultura, published the figures in release no. 280 to mark Día del Vino Mexicano, the national wine day created by a decree published on 10 January 2023. It describes the increase as 3.85% a year; across the two years that works out at close to 7.9%.

The money moved faster than the fruit. The value of the crop rose 22.8%, from 1,149.6 million pesos to 1,412.6 million, according to the ministry's statistics office, the DGSIAP. Divided by the tonnage, that is roughly 17,000 pesos a tonne in 2025, against just under 15,000 two years earlier.

The value of the crop grew almost three times as fast as the tonnage that came off the vines.

Mexico wine grape production by state

Twelve states harvested grapes for wine in 2025. Baja California led with 30,934 tonnes, about 37% of the national total. Zacatecas followed with 26,024 tonnes and Aguascalientes with 6,715. Together the three accounted for 76.5% of the crop.

The release lists the grapes most associated with each region: Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in Baja California; Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc in Guanajuato; Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir in Querétaro.

The Consejo Mexicano Vitivinícola, the industry council, puts the area planted with wine grapes at 9,477 hectares, the trade title Imagen Agropecuaria reported the same day. The council counts at least eight wine routes, which it says bring in 1,600 million pesos in tourism spending.

Exports are small, imports fill the glass

Mexico exported 1,085,000 litres of wine in 2025, Agricultura said, citing the economy ministry. Some 784,000 litres went to the United States; Japan, Belgium, Costa Rica, France, Spain and the United Kingdom are among the other buyers.

The domestic market matters more. Elizabeth Rojas Martínez, director of the Consejo Mexicano Vitivinícola, told the trade site Vinetur in October 2025 that 39 of every 100 bottles opened in Mexico are Mexican, and that consumption stands at 1.5 litres per person a year. The other 61 are imported. The wine lists of the best restaurants in Mexico City are one place where that ratio shows.

The timing is kind to the numbers: the release arrived as France's 2026 grape harvest is being counted as its smallest in decades. Mexico wine grape production is growing from a base small enough that 6,071 extra tonnes in two years counts as a trend. The 2026 figures will show whether it holds.
