50 Best rebrands as The 50 before the Paris hotel list

The restaurant, bar, hotel and vineyard rankings owned by William Reed move under one name, the first change of identity since the first list in 2002.

The 50 Best rebrand announced on Wednesday puts the group's restaurant, bar, hotel and vineyard rankings under a single name, The 50, twenty-four years after the first list appeared.

The brand belongs to William Reed, the British publisher that also owns Restaurant magazine, where the ranking began in 2002 as a magazine feature. Each division keeps its full title: The 50 Best Restaurants, The 50 Best Bars, The 50 Best Hotels, The 50 Best Vineyards. Regional editions follow the same pattern, so Asia's 50 Best Bars becomes The 50 Best Bars Asia, and the Discovery platform becomes The 50 Discovery.

The company says the change brings one website, simpler naming and a new visual identity built on a gemstone cut from fifty pieces. It is the first name change in the brand's history, although the logo has moved several times.

A ranking that owns four categories is no longer a list. It is a shelf.

What the 50 best rebrand does not change

The voting academies, the ranking methodology and the third-party adjudication stay as they are, according to the company. "Hospitality is ultimately about human connection," said Rikki Tidball, managing director of events at The 50. Lisa Green, managing director of content, said the new name "creates a platform for year-round storytelling".

Read plainly, that is a media business tidying up its shelf. Four rankings, several regional spin-offs, a travel platform and a year-round content operation had grown out of one list, and each carried its own name, its own sponsors and its own website. One masterbrand is easier to sell to partners than four.

The first list under the new name

The first awards to use the identity are The 50 Best Hotels 2026, staged in Paris in the week beginning 14 September, the first time that list has left London since it launched in 2023. A hundred properties are ranked. The restaurant list follows in November, when the ceremony travels to Lima; our report on the move to Peru has the dates.

Critics of the rankings will note that a cleaner brand does not answer the older complaints about voting geography, travel-funded panels and the commercial machinery around the ceremonies. The company's answer is the one it has always given: the academy votes, an accountancy firm counts, and nobody buys a place. Both things can be true at once, which is roughly the position Michelin occupies in Texas.

The new branding rolls out across the remaining rankings and platforms through the rest of 2026. The first real test arrives in Paris next week, when a list under a new name has to read like the same list.
