Istria's white truffle season runs to early November
A run of autumn festivals in Motovun, Livade and Buzet marks Croatia's answer to Alba — the same prized fungus, a lower profile, and a season that peaks this week.

Istria's white truffle season is in full swing, with the region's string of autumn truffle festivals running from Motovun to Livade to Buzet through 8 November.
The calendar, set by the Istria Tourist Board, opened in Motovun on 5 September and closes in Buzet on 7-8 November. This week it is Motovun's turn again, with the Teran and Truffle Festival pairing the region's dark, acidic red wine with white truffle on 17-18 October. In Livade, the Zigante Truffle Days run every weekend from 3 October to 1 November, free to enter, with a dedicated Tuber Food Fest on 24-25 October.
Alba's quieter rival
Same species, same hunting method, a fraction of the fanfare — and often the price.
Istria hunts the same species as Piedmont: Tuber magnatum pico, the white truffle that has been trading near €550 a kilo around Alba this season. The Istrian woods sit in a comparable band of oak and hornbeam, in the hills along the Mirna river valley, and the hunting method is identical — a trained dog, a handler, and the short window between a truffle's ripeness and the point at which it starts to lose its scent.
What Istria lacks is Alba's auction houses, record prices and international press pack. Its truffles reach restaurant kitchens with less fanfare and, trade figures aside, typically for less money. Zigante, the family business and restaurant that lends its name to the Livade festival, has spent three decades building the region's reputation as the accessible alternative: a place to taste the same fungus without the Piedmont premium.
What's left on the calendar
Livade's Tuber Food Fest, on 24-25 October, puts the truffle into restaurant menus and market stalls rather than just the hunt. The season closes in Buzet on 7-8 November with the Istrian Truffle Festival, the valley's last big gathering before the white truffle's short window shuts for the year. Black truffle season, longer and less urgent, follows through the winter.
For a dish built on the same truffle at its Piedmont address, AMUSE's white truffle risotto uses the Alba version; the technique travels equally well with an Istrian one.
